It has been thought by some that Muriel wanted to place a tricolour on the island out of reach of the local Royal Irish Constabulary who had removed one from the beach. There is no evidence near the end of the piece that she had the flag with her when she drowned, however, 100 years later to the day, a tricolour was planted on the island in her honour.
